A recent incident in NDG has sparked new talk of a ban on certain breeds in the borough. This terrible incident, unfortunately, could have been avoided if only the owners would have properly confined their dog.
Why do we not enforce the existing leash laws in this city? And how will a ban on specific breeds possibly work? With all the complications of identifying a dog's breed, the resources needed to enforce such laws and the infrastructure needed to properly process any complaints, how will a city which can not even ensure that dogs are walked on leash when not in a designated area possibly go about effectively implementing such a plan?
The obvious answer is, it can not be enforced and those owners, of all breeds, who act irresponsibly will continue to do so with few, if any, repercussions. Banning specific breeds will not make anyone safer, insisting on responsible dog ownership will.
The next C-d-N/NDG borough council meeting is Tues. Sept. 2nd at 7 pm. Please keep an eye on the agenda.
